Vehicle Categories in an IDP: Rules for Motorcycles and Scooters Abroad
Alignment of Categories with UN International Standards
An International Driving Permit (IDP) contains a strictly standardized grid of vehicle categories approved by the UN Conventions on Road Traffic. The document utilizes globally recognized letter designations: A, B, C, D, and corresponding subcategories. When issuing an IDP, only the categories that are officially active in your valid domestic driving license are transferred. It is legally impossible to add a new vehicle category through a translation document alone.
The Main Tourist Trap: Renting Scooters and Mopeds
The most frequent traffic violation committed by travelers at foreign resorts (especially in Southeast Asian destinations like Thailand and Indonesia, as well as European coastal areas) is operating two-wheeled vehicles without the proper category. There is a dangerous misconception that holding a car category "B" allows you to legally drive a low-powered scooter or moped. Under international regulations, operating any scooter or motor-scooter with an engine capacity exceeding 50cc strictly requires Category "A" (or subcategory "A1"). If your IDP does not have a stamp next to Category "A", local police will classify it as driving without a license.
Regulations for Heavy Vehicles and Passenger Buses
Similarly strict rules apply to commercial trucks and multi-passenger transport. If you plan to drive a motorhome (campervan), a large commercial van, or organize a group trip in a large minivan, always check the maximum authorized mass of the vehicle and the number of passenger seats. If the vehicle's mass exceeds 3,500 kg, Category "C" is required; if the number of passenger seats exceeds 8 (excluding the driver), Category "D" must be stamped in your IDP.
How to Read Pictograms in the International Booklet
For the ultimate convenience of foreign traffic police officers and rental agency clerks, the inside of the printed IDP booklet features intuitive pictograms next to each category (visual images of a motorcycle, passenger car, truck, bus). This completely addresses the language barrier: an inspector anywhere in the world needs just a single glance at the stamp grid to instantly verify your legal right to operate that specific type of vehicle.
