Will an International Driving Permit be valid abroad?
Alternatives to a Driving License
The question regarding the form of a driving license is by no means simple. In some countries, your domestic driving license will suffice, while in others, you will need an International Driving Permit or even a local license obtainable upon arrival. Additionally, there is a fourth option: a certified translation of your domestic license into major foreign languages (also known as an International Driving Document, or IDL).
Advantages of an IDP
This type of document is the most optimal choice for a traveler. First, it is valid in more than 100 countries. Second, it serves as a long-term solution (valid for 10 or 20 years, unlike short-term 3-year government-issued permits). Third, it involves no bureaucratic hassle: there is no need to visit government offices, stand in lines, or take exams. You can apply for an IDL directly on our website, and your digital copy will be ready within minutes.
Terms of Validity
An International Driving Permit, functioning as a translation of your domestic driving license into major world languages, is only valid abroad when accompanied by the original document. This fact must be kept in mind both when renting a car abroad and when traveling in your own vehicle.
IDP — An International Standard
Translating a domestic license into major languages (English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, German, Arabic, and Korean) is a globally recognized practice. According to global statistics, travelers worldwide regularly use online IDP services: US residents account for about 20% of all orders, while residents of Asian and Middle Eastern countries account for approximately 35%.
Countries Where IDP is Valid
An International Driving Permit is valid in most foreign states. Primarily, these are the countries that signed the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic: Austria, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bahrain, Belgium, Belarus, Bahamas, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Brazil, Venezuela, United Kingdom, Hungary, Ghana, Greece, Guyana, Germany, Zaire, Georgia, Denmark, Israel, Zimbabwe, Spain, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Costa Rica, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Kyrgyzstan, Ivory Coast, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Latvia, North Macedonia, Lithuania, Mexico, Morocco, Monaco, Norway, Niger, Poland, UAE, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, Portugal, Moldova, San Marino, Romania, Seychelles, Slovakia, Senegal, Slovenia, Thailand, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Finland, Uruguay, France, Philippines, Czech Republic, Croatia, Switzerland, Chile, Ecuador, Sweden, South Africa, Estonia.
The IDP is also recognized as a valid driving document for foreigners in states that signed the 1949 Geneva Convention: Albania, Australia, Andorra, Algeria, Bangladesh, Argentina, Botswana, Gambia, Benin, Belize, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Gibraltar, Grenada, Dominican Republic, Western Samoa, Egypt, Jordan, India, Iceland, Ireland, Canada, Cambodia, Laos, Lesotho, Lebanon, China, Cyprus, Congo, Mauritania, Malawi, Madagascar, Mali, Malaysia, Netherlands, Namibia, Malta, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Swaziland, Rwanda, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, USA, Singapore, Sierra Leone, Syria, Tanzania, Taiwan, Trinidad and Tobago, Togo, Tunisia, Fiji, Uganda, Turkey, French Polynesia, Japan, Jamaica.
Countries Where IDP is Not Valid
Some nations have not joined either convention. These are typically small countries in Asia and Africa. In such places, you will need to obtain a local driving permit upon arrival through local traffic authorities.
